Did you know such charts exist??

Which graphs come to your mind when I say the word “Visualization”? Is it always a line chart, a bar graph, a scatter plot, or a pie chart?

Well then let’s talk about something new today!

  1. Word Cloud (Tag Cloud)
Word Cloud on Disabled Female Population in India

Word Cloud is a visual representation of text data. True to its name it displays words in a manner where most frequently used words are larger in size compared to those words whose frequencies are less. One thing to note here is that words present in any word cloud are distributed randomly.

Remember:

  • It only helps to show the frequency of words.
  • Make sure to remove stop words (articles, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions).
  • Long words can sometimes be misleading.

2. Gantt Chart

A Basic Gantt Chart to help track the flow of a Competition (made in Notion)

Gantt chart is used to plan a project or a set of activities. Each task has a start and an end point which in turn help us roughly assess how long it will take to complete a particular task.

Different tasks can run simultaneously.

You can always customize your Gantt Chart, here are some of the ways:

  • A vertical line showing today’s date will help keep a track of what all things should have been done by that date.
  • Or an alternative way to represent how much percent of the work is done can be shown using the percentage inside each bar or shading the bar.
  • Some tasks are independent while some are dependent on other tasks, such dependencies can be shown using arrows that connect one task’s endpoint to another task’s start point.

3. Waffle Chart

Waffle Chart displaying 26.04% of disabled people are working

Waffle Chart is nothing but a square-shaped chart that is made up of 100 tiny squares (or some other shape) arranged in a 10-by-10 grid format. It can be divided into one or more categories represented by different colors.

So if we want to show the proportion of a particular category then the waffle chart can best describe it as each tiny square represents 1% adding up to a total of 100%.

For example, consider the above image wherein the dataset was of disabled people in India with other information like whether they are working or not. From the chart, we can say that only 26 % of the total disabled people are working, and the rest 74% are not.

4. Bar Chart Race

Daily New Covid Cases

Bar Chart Race is a very simple yet powerful chart that is used to compare two or more groups that are changing over time. We can think of it as an animated version of a horizontal bar chart taking into consideration the time factor.

Let’s have a look at the above chart. All the countries are compared with each other and finally, it is displaying the top 10 countries with the highest number of new covid cases observed every single day. Here, the longer the bar implies the more the number of new cases observed.
